Timid computer engineer Dennis Zimmann gets his life turned inside out after a car crash leaves him with a concussion – and a demon. Believing that he’s hallucinating as a result of his head injury, Dennis’ grip on reality fully unravels when an evil version of himself begins to torment him.

DOPPELGANGER #1 is the first of a four-issue limited series published by ALTERNA COMICS. Yes, the guys that are bringing back news print comics at an affordable price are letting us review their comics, and I cannot be any more excited!

I have been a long time fan of ALTERNA. I first found them on Twitter months ago, and after hearing about their newsprint comics, I bought a bunch of them from their Etsy store. I bought them for the novelty, and then became hooked when I realized that ALTERNA is more than the company that prints there comics on newspaper. They actually have good stories coming out!

DOPPELGANGER is no exception. I usually do not expect too much from the first issue of any comic because for the most part it is all about world building and introductions. This issue was similar, but better because I didn’t know what to expect going in. I finished the comic looking forward to what was coming next.

This comic, which was craftily written by Jordon Hart with great art by Emmanuel Xerx Javier, has a little bit of a The 6th Day vibe. I mean the long forgotten movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger about a clone taking over his comfortable suburban life. Yet it differs as in I do not think this is a normal “replaced by a clone” story. In fact I would surmise that this clone, who takes control of the body of the protagonist, Dennis Zimmann, might be a little alien.

Maybe that was a spoiler…so sorry. That’s the last one you will get out of me. I just wanted to say that I was pleasantly surprised by the premise of this story.

This book opens up with a BANG which sets the whole story in motion. You are introduced to the Zimmann family which represents the ideal American household situation for any thriller. You have a working marriage in a nice home, a promotion is on the way, a child that stills loves her parents, and everything seems to be happy and normal.

The perfect setting for everything going wrong.

You really need to pick up this book when it comes out on November 29, 2017, from your local comic book shop for ONLY $1.50. If your local comic book shop isn’t stocked up on ALTERNA comic books then you need to tell them to jump on it because these books are solid. It’ll be released later at Barnes & Noble, Toys R US, and other places months after that. So why wait? Find out how you can get your LCBS to order these babies by clicking here.

I give this issue a 8 out of 10 capes. This issue does a great job in world building, and setting up the conflict in the story. There was just enough of an appetizer to get you salivating for the main course. You are left with some pretty big questions at the end of this issue that you are not going to want to wait for the second. You are going to want it right away. However, you can’t… and that’s what makes this a good comic.
