The Superman Wars: The Untold Story Behind Superman
Welcome back to Super Hero Speak! Dave is out tonight, so Don is flying solo for a massive interview that every comic book fan needs to hear. We are thrilled to be joined by lawyer and author William Bernhardt to discuss his fascinating narrative non-fiction book, The Superman Wars.
While we all know the story of the Last Son of Krypton, the true, behind-the-scenes origin of his real-world creators—two kids from Cleveland named Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster—is a cautionary tale of exploitation, stolen rights, and decades of relentless litigation.
Much like our previous deep dives into the legendary Jack Kirby vs. Stan Lee creator debates and the modern ethical complexities of the Stan Lee AI voice pact, this conversation cuts right to the heart of the comic book industry’s dark history. Bernhardt details how a groundbreaking idea that birthed the entire superhero genre was sold away, leaving its creators fighting for scraps while executives built billion-dollar empires.
In this episode, Don and William discuss:
* The desperate, Depression-era origins of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.
* The invention of the modern comic book format and the birth of the superhero genre.
* The infamous $130 check and the truth about how Siegel and Shuster lost the rights to Superman.
* Mob ties, shady publishing executives, and the hostile takeover of early DC Comics.
* 70+ years of legal battles and what modern creators must learn to protect their intellectual property today.
* Thoughts on James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film and the legacy of the Man of Steel.
Whether you are a lifelong DC fan, a budding creator trying to protect your own IP, or just someone who loves a gripping legal thriller, this is an episode you cannot afford to miss.
