I gotta say: breath of fresh air, reading this. I saw this line in the search bar and thought, "Oh thank frell, someone gets it." > The whole concept of the show is bad, and if we are being totally honest bad for society. Because shows like this aren't good deconstructions of a theme, they're grandstanding facsimiles of philosophic exploration; shows like this don't really get the viewer to *think*, they just get the viewer mired in a stew of schadenfreude and, worse, make the viewer *feel* as if they're being inducted into some sort of clever discussion. But, ultimately, it's just a collection of poorly-designed and painfully (to my mind) obvious emotional hooks that afford a negative value. Why negative? Because it not only destroys the value in appreciating and respecting the numinous in live, utterly dismissing any sense of reverence in favor of puerile simplicity, it inoculates the viewer to hardship and cruelty in the most horrific of ways. Furthermore, as I've seen other reviewers point out, this show in particular fails to call out the real fascist support coming from America's real-world middle class; instead of tackling the issue of fascism in a way that offers real guidance on how to disentangle ourselves from its grip, the show provides apologism for those who prop it up (even incidentally or through inaction) and offers only a grotesque revenge fantasy that's as pointless in the show as it would be in the real world. There's nothing here to dissect, nothing here worthy of serious contemplation. It's worse than hollow: it's a black hole, sucking viewers in and leaving them senseless and unaware. Anyway, thanks for writing this. I hope more people touch base with what heroism really means and why superheroes matter.

i know this post is hella old but i just wanted to express my thoughts . i disagree with you. the show is about real world and the disgusting politics, except, they are all dressed up as superheroes with powers. "No one in The Boys is relatable. All the suits are selfish, fame hogging, greedy and just plain awful." Isnt that what people with power today are? And the thing you said about starlight, i think she just wanted to quit being a loner and actually do something with her life plus as soon as homelander finds out about her connection with the boys, she obviously realises that if she quits, vought would keep a vigilant eye on her over whatever she does. And homelander obviously is selfish narcissist who just wants love and acceptance and just going against the world isnt what he really wants.
