REVIEW: Zero Jumper #1

An ancient power source that can manipulate space and time is buried deep on a barren world and Juno, the last human, must embark on a dangerous journey to find it. Her mission is simple: go back in time and save humanity from extinction. The cost? Her life.

Sometime last year I declared that “ZERO JUMPER” was my most anticipated 2018 comic published by ALTERNA COMICS. I was able to read the first issue about a month ago, and I have to say that it lived up to the hype I had for it in my mind.

ZERO JUMPER #1 is the first of a four issue mini-series. All of it, the art, the writing, the coloring, and the lettering was done by Patrick Mulholland. Patrick, of whom I discovered on Twitter well over a year ago, is no stranger to the indie comic scene.

In fact, if you are also anticipating this comic book series, like I was, then you should definitely check out his other series “BROKEN SAVIORS” on Comixology. It is a great look of Mulholland’s start and how far he has come since then. A bit of warning though, the series is cut too short and there isn’t a clear resolution. This is due to the fact the series is in limbo because one of the creators wanted to pitch it to a bigger studio. A concluding issue might not come to fruition for a while. Which is rather unfortunate because it was actually a cool story.

Don’t fret though! ZERO JUMPER will be a complete story, and since it was picked up by Alterna you can guarantee that you will get the chance to see everything from beginning to end.

So enough with the fluff! Let’s dive in to my review:

The first thing that you will notice when you look at the pages of these stories is the art. ZERO JUMPER is everything that a digitally comic should be. It takes advantage of every tool in the digital tool box, such as the brushes, lighting effects, motion blurs, and color matching. As a comics artist myself, I appreciate the mood that was set by the atmosphere that Mulholland created in these first 22 pages.

The next thing you will notice after being blown away by the art is the writing. Mulholland reminds me of Tony S. Daniels of DC fame. He is basically a quadruple threat. He can write, he can draw, and oh boy….’dem colors on that page.

You are introduced to the protagonist in the beginning pages of the story. She is a girl named Juno who is from the future and uses science to travel back in time. Her mission is to save her planet from the destruction that it once faced. The only drawback to time traveling is the amount of pure “Zero Point Energy” it takes to do so. An energy of which is very rare, and she will have to travel all over the cosmos to find it.

There are some great beats that you will need to pay attention to when you read this story, and yes, you DO have to read it. Alterna Comics is breaking from its 2017 shell and is branching into new territory this year with great titles. Some of which have been highlighted in previous episodes of the main Super Hero Speak podcast. Patrick Mulholland is no exception as I personally had the privilege of interviewing him, and will be posting that interview as a tag in an upcoming episode.

So overall, I give this comic a 10 out of 10 capes. I think that you will be pleasantly surprised with what you will be getting from this issue, and this series as a whole. It’s an incredible beginning for an already incredible story. I can’t wait to read what happens next.
