Jack Boniface is a New Orleans musician who controls the power of Shadow. It is a power that his lineage grants him. He uses his powers to protect the living from the creatures and demons from the dead side even when it is a bunch of thrill-seeking 1%ers. 1%ers that know nothing of the forces of voodoo and evil that they play with. The veil between our reality and the dead side is being weakened. The Shadowman is joined by an unlikely ally and seeks to find another to defend the realm of the living from the realm of the dead.

Cullen Bunn continues to please with this well thought out story of the first issue and does a great job foreshadowing what may happen in the future. He does a great job of painting each scene with his words and it really helps you understand the world in which the Shadowman exist. You also get a good representation of what it is like to normally be in the know, but not entirely informed about what is going on and then to have a frenemy come to try and help you.

The detail on the artwork sells each scene. You can see every wrinkle on an old woman’s face. The shading is nicely done as well, and everything looks realistic. The lines are all very solid and clean as well as the proportions on the characters are done masterfully. Jon Davis-Hunt shines with his depiction of humans as well as the demons that attack. The comic loses some points because the color palette is very limited and some of the action is a little hard to follow. It does not take you out of the story at all, so this in no way hurts the book because a lot of the times it fits the scene.

Overall, I give Shadowman #1 8 capes out of 10. It is an interesting twist on the Shadowman character, and the artwork is very fitting for this supernatural horror story.
