Is cosplay ruining conventions?

  • I was having a similar conversation with a friend about this, but it was focused on the celebrity guests that have little to nothing to do with comics or comic culture. Like wrestlers and 90210 trend tv stars. I don’t know, if I’m selling something at a con, I say the more people through the door the better my chances are to sell something.
Personally, I like the cosplay guests; the real ones, not so much the people that just picked up a costume at their local wal-mart, but the cosplayers that create their own costumes from scratch. Those cosplayers have a great imagination.

  • I collected comics as a kid in the 80’s, 90’s. And still buy stuff to decorate my shelves. I used to love attending conventions to share experiences and get my hands on new stuff and collectibles. Unfortunately I spend more time making sure my kid doesn’t get trampled on by cos-players, then enjoying the experience with him.

They pack these comic-cons with so many people it’s a nightmare to navigate or explore. A lot of young cos-players and pseudo-nerds floating around the conventions take up space (and they are not to blame, they are just having fun which is expected) which also makes it hard (and unsafe) for families with kids to walk around.

I wished conventions had a family day, I can spend with my kids and get them clothing/costumes, toys, comics and collectibles. The kid collectors that have grown up on comics, are now grown adults with families (and money to spend) are now deterred from attending.

If convention leadership were to specify days (or times) for just families / teens & young adults / adult collectors it would help target the right audience and the cash would be pouring into their registers regularly. Unfortunately the mix is so overwhelming the vendors can’t target all audiences (consumers) at once appropriately.

  • I mean I would think it’s the big name corporate cons that run the smaller ones out of business while charging con goers an arm and a leg for photo ops and charging indie artists more and more every year for a smaller and smaller space, but hey that could just be me.
